Lunar Phases & Tarot: Strengthening Your Readings with the Moon Cycle

Lunar Phases & Tarot — Strengthen Your Readings with the Moon Cycle

1. The Moon and Tarot Are Already Connected

The second Major Arcana card (number 2) is The High Priestess. She sits at the foot of the moon, holding two scrolls — one of the moon and one of hidden knowledge.

The moon itself also rules over:

  • The subconscious / intuition
  • Emotions / cycles
  • Bodily rhythms (especially feminine ones)
  • 'Introspective' energy

Tarot and the moon have long been deeply connected in tradition, yet modern practitioners rarely use them together. That's a tremendous waste.

2. The 8 Phases of the Lunar Cycle (For Tarot Readers)

Phase 1: New Moon ✨

Energy: Fresh starts, planting intentions

Best question: 'What do I want to ____ over the next month'

Phase 2: Waxing Crescent 🌒

Energy: Momentum, pushing forward

Best question: 'What do I need to do about ____'

Phase 3: First Quarter 🌓

Energy: Decision, action

Best question: 'Should I ____ or not'

Phase 4: Waxing Gibbous 🌔

Energy: Refinement, adjustment

Best question: 'How should I adjust ____'

Phase 5: Full Moon 🌕

Energy: Completion / peak / release

Best question: Anything about 'what I have completed' / anything about 'what I need to see clearly'

Phase 6: Waning Gibbous 🌖

Energy: Gratitude / sharing

Best question: 'How is my ____ progressing' / 'How can I express thanks'

Phase 7: Last Quarter 🌗

Energy: Release / reflection

Best question: 'What should I let go of'

Phase 8: Waning Crescent 🌘

Energy: Rest / integration

Best question: Skip readings / do your own inner work

3. New Moon Readings — Planting Intentions

The New Moon is the ideal moment to plant intentions. You can lay out a 3-card "New Moon Intention Spread":

New Moon Intention Spread (3 Cards)

[ 1. Where I am ] | [ 2. Who I want to become ] | [ 3. The obstacle ]

How to read it: 'Right now I (1) am ____, I want to (2) become ____, but (3) ____ is my obstacle.'

Steps for a New Moon Reading

  1. 30 minutes before the New Moon, settle into a quiet room
  2. Write down your intention (specific, measurable, achievable): for example, 'I want to start my new job by June 1st'
  3. Then draw 3 cards using the intention spread
  4. Write down your interpretation along with your intention — save it, and you've just made a pact with your future self

Look back in a month — you'll be surprised. The cards often come true.

4. Full Moon Readings — Completion + Release

The Full Moon is the most powerful lunar phase, making it the best time for "see clearly" readings:

Full Moon Clarity Spread (5 Cards)

[ What I'm doing ] | [ What I don't know ] | [ What I won't look at ] | [ What I need to release ] | [ What I need to receive ]

How to read it: 'I'm (1) doing ____, but I (2) don't know ____, and I (3) won't look at ____. I should release (4) ____ and receive (5) ____.'

The most common way to use Full Moon readings is as a tool for 'Full Moon energetic cleansing.'

Full Moon Release Ritual

  1. On Full Moon night, in a softly lit room
  2. Lay out every card you drew that week
  3. Say one sentence to each card: 'What you taught me, I receive' / 'What you reminded me of, I address' / 'What I release, I release'
  4. Put the cards back in their box
  5. The next day, draw one new card as a guiding light for the coming month

This ritual is deeply healing — once a month.

5. Lunar Phase + Tarot Element Correspondences

New Moon = Fire (beginnings) → Use the Wands

Full Moon = Water (fullness / emotion) → Use the Cups

Waxing Moon = Air (decisions) → Use the Swords

Waning Moon = Earth (integration / material) → Use the Pentacles

If you want to strictly "match" the lunar phase, you can draw from the corresponding suit:

Lunar PhaseWhich Suit to Use
New MoonWands (Fire)
Waxing MoonSwords (Air)
Full MoonCups (Water)
Waning MoonPentacles (Earth)

6. The High Priestess — The Direct Link Between Moon & Tarot

The High Priestess (card 2) is the 'Moon Queen' of the Tarot. She represents:

  • The subconscious
  • Intuition
  • Inner wisdom
  • What remains unspoken
  • Like the moon itself, rhythmic, cyclical, introspective

If you draw The High Priestess during a Full Moon reading, this is an extremely strong signal: you need to find your answers in stillness and introspection.

7. Suggested Reading Frequency by Lunar Phase

Early Month (Days 1–7)

  • New Moon: Lay out an intention spread
  • Waxing Crescent: Push your actions forward

Mid-Month (Days 8–14)

  • 1–2 days before the Full Moon: Full Moon Clarity Spread
  • Full Moon night: Full Moon ritual

End of Month (Days 15–30)

  • Last Quarter: Release spread
  • Waning Crescent: Don't do new readings — let yourself be empty

If you follow the moon strictly, you have a reading at the start of every month, an integration ritual at the end, 12 Full Moon rituals and 12 New Moon intentions a year. This is a profound path of Tarot practice.

8. Menstrual Cycle + Tarot (Optional)

The menstrual cycle (~28 days) mirrors the lunar cycle (which is why it's called "menstruation" — from the Latin "mensis," meaning month).

If you'd like to sync your cycle with the lunar phases, here's how:

  • Pre-menstruation (Waning Crescent): Introspection, rest
  • During menstruation: Release + integration
  • Right after your period ends (New Moon): Lay out an intention spread
  • Ovulation (Full Moon): Peak energy + clarity check

If you don't menstruate or this doesn't apply to you, simply skip ahead to the lunar phases.

9. For the "I Don't Believe in Moon Phases" Crowd

If you think 'lunar phases are just superstition,' you can absolutely substitute 'a fixed day each month' — for example:

  • The 1st of every month = New Moon ritual (you can start something new)
  • The 15th of every month = Full Moon ritual (you can do a clearing)

Two rituals every 30 days. More 'predictable' than the moon — but the energy is the same.

10. Closing Thoughts

Lunar phases + Tarot = 'a conversation with the universe' + 'a conversation with yourself.'

Tarot alone gives you the present moment.

The lunar cycle alone gives you rhythm.

Together, they show you exactly where you are in the cycle — and that kind of clarity is deeply healing.

Our Lotus Tarot app has both a 'Today's Moon Phase' and a 'Daily Card' feature. You can check the moon, draw a card, and get a double dose of clarity on the day you need it most.

May the rhythm of the moon deepen your Tarot practice.
